Building the new Hospitalito

Building the New and Permanent
Hospitalito Atitlán

Pueblo a Pueblo

In the November 2010 Phase II of construction will be completed and all medical services will be relocated from the temporary location in Tzanchichum to the first floor of the new building. Fundraising and work to complete construction of Phase III will then be suspended while the Board of Directors secures a strong financial base for Hospitalito Atitlán. Thanks to everyone who donated to construction and helped to build the beautiful new hospital for the people of Santiago Atitlán.

Construction of the Hospital building began on November 10th, 2008. Gaspar Mendoza was hired as the Maestro de Obra or Foreman. Ezequiel Sosof is in charge of material inventory and Sara Ajtubal works on bids and bookkeeping. Both Dr. Juan Manuel Chuc and Lyn Dickey sign all checks for purchases and payroll

More than 35 workers from Santiago Atitlán are employed full-time and their pay is based on their ability. All have health insurance coverage. They work Monday to Friday, starting at 7 AM in rainy season and finishing at 4 PM with two 15 minutes breaks and a half hour lunch break. Many of the workers attend school on Saturday.

Photos of the construction process are updated regularly here.
